Murder mystery dinner just right for Halloween

Couples seeking a Halloween weekend date night can step into a 1928 speakeasy where dinner is served, secrets emerge and a murder must be solved.

Catalyst Theatre, in partnership with The Venue – Hastings, will present “The Gilded Cage: An Immersive Mystery Dinner” on Friday, Oct. 30. The original production puts guests inside the story as nine local actors reveal clues and unexpected twists around the dining room. A live three-piece band performs period-inspired music throughout the evening.

The experience begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception and passed hors d’oeuvres, followed by a three-course dinner prepared by Chef Ellie Shultze. A St. Augustine native trained at the Natural Gourmet Institute in New York City, Shultze brings global influences and an emphasis on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients to her cooking. As guests dine, the murder mystery unfolds around their tables.

“‘The Gilded Cage’ is the perfect Halloween night out for anyone looking for a little mystery with their dinner,” said Sherrie Provence, artistic director and founder of Catalyst Theatre. “With live music, a three-course meal and characters drawing you into the story, it’s a chance to enjoy an evening together while trying to solve the mystery before dessert.”

With its shadowy speakeasy setting and mystery unfolding over dinner, the Oct. 30 performance offers an early start to Halloween celebrations. Guests can follow the clues and try to identify the killer before the night is over.

Tickets are $125 per person, and a portion of the proceeds benefits Hastings Main Street. Advance reservations are required. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to catalysttheatre.com.
