To the Editor:
This year’s ballot offers a historic opportunity for St. Johns County residents to decide on the future direction of our county. By voting “yes,” on the St. Johns Forever Land Conservation Referendum, voters can help counter out-of-control development that is threatening our quality of life in beautiful St. Johns County.
The referendum, approved by the St. Johns County Board of Commissioners in August, provides a sustainable source of funding for the county to purchase conservation lands. Lands that help protect water quality; mitigate impacts from floods and hurricanes; provide habitat for fish, birds and other wildlife; and offer recreational opportunities like bird watching, fishing and hunting.
A “Yes” vote will authorize the county to issue bonds up to $100 million to purchase and manage these important conservation lands.
St. Johns County is the only county on Florida’s East Coast without dedicated, voter-approved conservation funding — a gap that limits its ability to compete for state and federal matching grants. (Some counties have matched local dollars more than five to one.) But this year, voters have a historic opportunity to change this by voting for the Land Conservation Referendum.
Our beautiful region is home to extraordinary natural places, from our marshes and waterways to our majestic live oaks and abundant native wildlife. Protecting these special places is essential to preserving the character and natural heritage of our community for future generations.
Cast your ballot early, vote-by mail, or on Election Day, Nov. 3.
Ballot Reminder: The referendum will be the very last item located on the back of your physical voter ballot. Make sure to flip your ballot over to cast your YES vote!
