The angels return to Butterfield

Each year, potter Michael Higbe creates a new twist for his ongoing ornament series, this year’s bright swirly glazes have been called exquisite. All of Higbe’s glazes are jewel-like, a bowl is both functional and an art piece to be treasured.

Higbe is being featured in the gallery during November; his pottery is useful, collectible and gift-worthy.

Higbe was born and raised in the North Florida area where he studied ceramics at Florida State College at Jacksonville. He has a love for functional pottery that brings beauty to the everyday. He does both slab work and throws on the wheel, and recently he produced 40 ornamental clay boxes that were used as awards for a national contest for Winter Guard International held in Ohio this spring.

Higbe has won awards in Northeast Florida and has shown his work at CoRK, Great Hang Ups gallery in Fleming Island and is currently showing at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery, 137 King St., St. Augustine.

Higbe’s wife, Julia, is an art teacher in Clay County.

Butterfield gallery is open every day 11 a.m to 5 p.m. and on the First Friday of every month until 9 p.m.
