To the editor:
Who fully vets political candidates anymore?
The answer should be Y-O-U. It is so easy to just follow someone else’s recommendation, but is that normally something you would do with something so important? I think not.
You may be over national politics, but your local politics directly impact your daily life. Seems lately that our major parties sit back and do not fulfill their most basic responsibility in identifying and welcoming all potential candidates, holding public debates and letting the voters decide who they think is best qualified.
There is this constant top-down philosophy that doesn’t end up well. What happened to good, old-fashioned politicking? Social media doesn’t cut it because those are the squawkers throwing out lots of emotion and, at times, unsubstantiated claims.
Try wading through all that, and don’t forget your boots!
Not everyone is an activist, and most are not interested in campaigning. Voting has never been easier, but you still need to do your homework. The objective is to identify the most qualified candidate with the most experience for the job at hand.
It wouldn’t be so darn hard if that was also the local party’s objective. Get out and vote smart!
