Young team key to Jaguars’ future

The Jacksonville Jaguars have officially concluded the preseason with a record of 2-1.

The Jaguars defeated the New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the preseason but lost to the Carolina Panthers.

Last season, the Jaguars went 13-4 and finished the regular season in first place in the AFC South. They lost 27-24 to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild-Card round.

Head Coach Liam Coen is entering his second season with the franchise, and he would love nothing more than to build off last season’s success.

The Jaguars have released their initial 53-man roster, and they officially have one of the youngest teams in the NFL heading into this season with an average age of 25.9 years old.

Starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence is 26 while other star players including Brian Thomas Jr., Cam Little and Travis Hunter are even younger.

General Manager James Gladstone has made it his mission to build the roster around younger players, which can have its pros and cons.

Lawrence has faced increased criticism for his inconsistent and sometimes unreliable play. The fear is that at 26 years old he is already set in his ways and will not improve. However, he does still have a small window of opportunity to prove himself, but he will be under scrutiny this season.

Jacksonville made a trade with the Miami Dolphins on Aug. 29 for quarterback Quinn Ewers in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2028 draft. Ewers played in four games last season and completed 66.3% of his passes.

Other notable additions to the roster include undrafted free agent rookies CJ Williams and Josh Cameron. Williams and Cameron stood out during training camp and will provide some depth behind the starters.

The Jaguars are set to kick off week one of the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 13, against the Cleveland Browns.
