Writers’ meeting subject: K-9 characters

They’re loyal, fearless and brilliant on the job. From finding lost people to detecting drugs, bombs and buried evidence, dogs risk their lives to protect and serve alongside their human partners. For more than a century, these canine heroes have captured our imaginations in film, television and novels, and readers can’t get enough.

At the next monthly Sisters in Crime meeting at noon Saturday, Nov. 1, author and retired K-9 handler Kathleen Donnelly will discuss how to bring authenticity to these beloved four-legged detectives.

In her presentation, “Four-Legged Detectives and Your Books,” Donnelly will take writers behind the scenes of the K-9 world to cover how handlers select and train their dogs, what a real search is like and how to capture the bond and tension of a working team on the page.

Whether writing a mystery, a thriller or stories about courageous canines, writers will come away with insights to make their writing more vivid and true to life.

This event is free and open to all writers and readers interested in crime fiction.

The meeting will be held at the Ponte Vedra Beach Library, 101 Library Blvd., Ponte Vedra Beach. To attend the meeting via Zoom, go to NEFloridaSistersinCrime.org.
