Unique Dvořák concert to be presented

Posted

In a unique concert, Beaches Fine Arts Series will present “Cultural Crossroads: Dvořák in America,” an exploration of Dvořák’s fascination with indigenous and black music discovered during his time in America.

This concert features Native American music, old and new, performed by Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai and percussionist Will Clipman, traditional spirituals sung by bass Kenneth Kellogg, coupled with selections illustrating Dvořák’s integration of this music into his own writings. The multi-media event will also feature narrator Pamela Freund-Striplen.

With its stellar and diverse cast of musicians, it is a catalyst for audience engagement as it entertains, educates and inspires, drawing from the curiosity of the Czech composer a century ago.

Among the works to be performed are selections performed by Duke University’s Ciompi Quartet from several of Dvořák’s “American” quartets and quintets, a selection of spirituals with Kellogg, and “Clan of the Mists” by Nakai.

The concert will be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 9 at St. Paul’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 465 11th Ave. N., Jacksonville Beach. Doors open at 3:15 p.m.

A reception to meet the artists follows the free concert in Christopher Lobby at the rear of the sanctuary.

All Beaches Fine Arts Series concerts are free to all.
