Teen enjoys volunteering with THE PLAYERS

Here is a brief interview with Lila Weaver, a teen volunteer at THE PLAYERS Championship.

Share a little bit about yourself.

I’ve been playing golf as long as I can remember, but started taking it seriously the summer after I turned 9. Now, 15, I’m leading my high school team heading into districts, while also competing in HJGT and NFJG events.

How long have you been a volunteer and in what roles?

I’ve attended THE PLAYERS every year since I was born, so getting involved as soon as I could was not something I had to think twice about. I started on the range as a runner for a few years, then moved up to standard bearer as soon as I was old enough.

What's your favorite memory as a PLAYERS volunteer?

Although I’m sure the rainy weekend was not enjoyable for most, without that extra Monday added, I would have never been able to have a core memory of standard bearer for Cam Smith to finish his third round on the day he won (2022). And when I walked in from my shift, I was informed one of my best friends won runner-up for standard bearer of the year and I was lucky enough to attend the awards ceremony with her, inside the ropes. It was a surreal experience that I’ll treasure forever.

Who's your favorite PLAYERS champion and why?

A lot of my favorite players are those who I have had fun interactions with during practice rounds. In 2021, Justin took some time with my brother and me for pictures and autographs. So, following him for the whole championship and cheering him on was a blast. Practice round days are definitely underrated. It’s such a different and fun vibe those days.

What is your favorite thing to do when not volunteering?

At THE PLAYERS when I’m not volunteering, I like to walk around with my family and follow our favorite players, and try to get some autographs, depending on what day it is.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a high school golfer and my dream is to play Division 1 golf. I would love to play for The University of Florida, but playing for a small school like Samford has been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

Hometown?

I’ve lived in St. Johns, Florida, my whole life.
