After 21 days of incubation, preschoolers at Ivybrook Academy’s Julington Creek and Valley Ridge campuses watched their chicks hatch right in the classroom as part of the school’s Chick Embryology Project. Leading up to the big moment, students acted as “little scientists,” checking the incubator, documenting observations, asking questions and creating chick-themed art and stories. Now that the chicks have arrived, the children are helping care for them, turning the experience into a hands-on lesson in science, responsibility and curiosity at a very young age. It’s an example of Ivybrook’s blended Montessori and Reggio Emilia approach, where curiosity and real-world experiences drive learning.
