St. Johns County responds to Tropical Storm Ian: What you need to know

Bridge closure status

As of 11 a.m. today (Wednesday), St. Johns County bridges were not closed. Continue to monitor St. Johns County Emergency Management’s social media and the sjcfl.us/hurricane website. Officials will provide an update if the decision is made to close bridges.

Emergency Management Citizens Information Line open

The St. Johns County Emergency Management Citizen Information Line is open to help answer questions about Tropical Storm Ian. For information, call 904-824-5550. Residents can find tips and resources such as supply kits, pets and other emergency response information at www.sjcemergencymanagement.com.

St. Johns County Government Offices
With the exception of emergency service employees responding to Tropical Storm Ian, all offices and departments of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, the Supervisor of Elections Office, the Property Appraiser’s Office, the Clerk of Courts Office and the County Courthouse will be closed through Friday, Sept. 30. Additionally, the government offices of the City of St. Augustine and City of St. Augustine Beach will also be closed. The St. Augustine Municipal Marina will close at noon today (Wednesday). The offices of the Tax Collector will be closed today (Wednesday) and Thursday.

St. Johns County Garbage and Recycling Services
St. Johns County garbage and recycling collection schedules are not affected. Information regarding collection schedules for the remainder of the week will be released when available. Residential and commercial waste collection for the City of St. Augustine will be suspended Thursday and Friday. Service will resume as soon as conditions allow.

St. Johns County Parks and Beach Services
All St. Johns County Parks & Recreation parks and facilities will be closed through Friday. This includes but is not limited to athletic playing fields, passive parks, boat ramps, playgrounds, fishing piers and the St. Johns Golf Course. Beachfront parks and walkovers will also be closed during this time. Parks and facilities will reopen when safety inspections have been completed and weather conditions allow.

Beach driving restricted

Driving on all St. Johns County beaches will be restricted beginning at 5 p.m. today due to the effects of Tropical Storm Ian. Pedestrian access to the beach remains available at off-beach parks and beach walkovers. Note that dangerous surf and rip conditions are expected, so beachgoers should avoid swimming. Sandbags available

St. Johns County is providing free sandbags and sand underneath the Palm Valley Bridge on the east side of the Intracoastal Waterway until 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, weather permitting. Residents must provide their transportation and shovels and are responsible for filling their bags. There is a maximum allocation of 20 bags per person. Cleanup referrals offered

For those needing assistance with damage from Tropical Storm Ian, a home cleanup hotline has been arranged. Call 800-451-1954 to ask for help. Volunteers will connect callers with representatives of local relief organizations, community groups and faith communities who may be able to assist with cutting fallen trees; drywall, flooring and appliance removal; tarping roofs and mold mitigation. All services are free, but the service is not guaranteed due to the overwhelming need. The hotline will remain open until Oct. 28. To learn more, go to crisiscleanup.org.
