St. John’s Academy salutes military all year long

Posted

As Memorial Day approaches, the nation takes time to honor those who have served our country in military service and have made the ultimate sacrifice. St. John’s Academy has established traditions that recognize military members at several of the school’s events and in the course of study throughout the school year, for example:

  • Friday assembly with the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem recognizing the military parents and visitors in attendance.
  • Special assemblies to honor both Veterans Day and Memorial Day, recognizing parents and grandparents who have served in the armed forces.
  • Curriculum: The school’s classical Christian studies introduce the American Founding Fathers and traditional holidays in the second grade. In the fifth and sixth grades, America’s history starts with the explorers and concludes in the present day using primary sources and literature integrated with the time period. Plus, a revisit of American government and literature in the 11th grade rounds out their understanding of the foundational documents and why the nation is worth protecting.
  • The yearend Spring Revue includes the Presentation of Colors and singing of all the military anthems: “Anchors Aweigh,” “The Marines’ Hymn,” “The U.S. Air Force,” “The Army Goes Rolling Along” and the Coast Guard’s anthem “Semper Paratus.”
  • Special presentations by the American Military Historical Society about World War I, presented by a group of dedicated men who poured their hearts and souls into creating the collection, which they shared with the students.
  • Most recently, the USO visited St. John’s Academy to celebrate April as the month of “A Military Child.” Forty-two students were presented with special gift bags.

“We are proud to honor our United States military all year long at St. John's Academy,” said Wallis Brooks St. John’s Academy head of school. “May God Bless America!”
