The Ponte Vedra Community Association’s inaugural 4th of July Community Parade was a tremendous success.
The festivities began with a blessing by Christ Church Rev. Deacon Lelia Quinlan, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Scout Troop 9297.
The parade followed and included about 40 golf carts, 50 bikes, countless scooters, many strollers and wagons, 15 dogs and a fire rescue truck and fire engine from Station 10.
A highlight was the parade’s grand marshal, retired World War II Cpl. John Krehel who at 100 rode in a 1963 bright red convertible with his son, grandson and great-grandson — and wore his Uncle Sam hat.
Prizes awarded at the parade’s completion were: the Powell family as Most Patriotic, the Waugh family for Best Golf Cart, Chelsea Waugh’s pet for Best-Dressed Dog, Emory Jones and Bennett and Sydni Conk for Best Scooters, and Augie Kirk for Best Bike (runner up was Ben Shuck).
The success of the parade guaranteed that it will now be an annual tradition.
