Ponte Vedra Gardens celebrates senior prom

Ponte Vedra Gardens Memory Care Community hosted their senior prom on Wednesday, June 10.

The theme of the prom was “Out of This World” and residents really did feel like they went to a different planet.

“For two hours on Wednesday my 90-year-old Mom and her friends at Ponte Vedra Gardens forgot all the pains and heartaches of aging and were magically transported to a planet where they were young and fun again,” said Patti Atchison.

The prom was complete with a dance floor, music and alien cupcakes to go along with the theme.

Many of the residents even pitched in and helped make some of the space-themed decorations in the weeks leading up to the prom.

“They crafted the huge sun and the moon via paper mâché. Paper mâché helps stimulate the senses through touch and texture. Tearing paper, mixing paste and shaping objects encourages fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination while providing a calming, repetitive activity that reduces stress and anxiety,” said Dee Stanziano, Ponte Vedra Gardens activities director.

Paul and Brenda were crowned 2026 Prom King and Queen. Paul is a former professor of psychology at the University of Florida, and Brenda is a former employment investigator.

“While they aren’t a couple, they are a wonderful match for our space-themed celebration,” said Stanziano. “Together, they reflect the wonder, curiosity and adventure of the cosmos — much like the stars, planets and galaxies that inspire this year’s event.”

The mission of Ponte Vedra Gardens Memory Care Community is to enhance and enrich the lives of individuals living with dementia through a person-centered approach to memory care. Their goal is to help individuals living with dementia live a life that is full of joy and purpose.

The senior prom is a tradition at Ponte Vedra Gardens that will continue for years to come.

“Music and dance are the unsung heroes for Alzheimer’s and dementia treatment, working wonders as favorite songs bring back memories,” said Stanziano.
