PLAYERS Community Senior Center announces August programs

The following programs will be held at COA’s THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center, 175 Landrum Lane, Ponte Vedra Beach, beginning in August.  Most activities are weekly and will begin on Aug. 4. For more information, call the center at 904-209-3659 or go to www.coasjc.org/ponte-vedra-center. 

  • Lunch — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 12 to 1 p.m. Registration is required a week in advance & the required fee is $5 per meal, due upon arrival.
  • Lunch — Thursdays: Four weeks starting Thursday, Aug, 6, from 12 to 1 p.m. Registration is required a week in advance & the required fee is $5 per meal, due upon arrival.
  • Duplicate Bridge: Four weeks on Fridays, starting Aug. 7, from 12 to 3 p.m. Required fee is $2 per person, per Friday. You must have a partner and experience to play.
  • Tap Dance Class: Instructor Ginny Wirzbicki brings much experience to this style of dance and encourages all levels to participate or learn. Four weeks on Fridays, starting Aug. 7 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.  Fee required is $6.25 per class.
  • Open Painting: Four weeks on Wednesdays, starting Aug. 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  No fee is required; Bring your own supplies.
  • Caregiver Support Group (Free Program): The group is open to all adult caregivers; meets once a month, on the first Wednesday of each month. Next date is Wednesday, Aug. 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 
  • Chair Exercise — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 9:30 to 10 a.m.
  • Chair Exercise — Thursdays: Four weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 6, from 9:30 to 10 a.m.
  • Tai Chi (Beginner) w/Dennis Sheils: Four Thursdays, starting Aug. 6, from 10 to 11 a.m.   
  • Canasta — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 
  • Canasta — Thursdays: Four weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Mexican Train Dominoes: Four weeks on Tuesdays, starting Aug. 4, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Mexican Train Dominoes: Four weeks on Thursdays, starting Aug. 6, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. (Second Thursday of the month, program ends at 11 a.m.)            
  • Bingo — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 1 to 2 p.m.  Fee is $1 per card.
  • Bingo — Thursdays: Four weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 6, from 1 to 2 p.m.  Fee is $1 per card.
  • Social Bridge: Four weeks on Wednesdays, starting Aug. 5, from 9:30 a.m. to noon
  • Let’s Play Board Games: Rummikub, Scrabble, Yahtzee, Cards, and more! Enjoy socializing and making new friends while participating in some friendly competition; four weeks on Wednesdays, starting Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to noon
  • Individual Rotation Duplicate Bridge (Experienced): Four weeks on Wednesdays, starting Aug. 5, from 12:30 to 4 p.m.  Required fee is $2 per person.
  • Wii Bowling: Four weeks on Thursdays, starting Aug. 6, 10-11 a.m.
  • Computer Room: Available Tuesdays through Fridays during open hours; general assistance available.
  • Ballroom Basics: Join volunteer Scott Adkins who will show you the basic steps of ballroom dance (waltz, foxtrot, rumba). No partner is needed; however, comfortable shoes are a must (leather soles are best). Ballroom dance has been proven to be one of the best activities to promote brain health! Four weeks on Thursdays, starting Aug. 6, from 11 a.m. to noon
  • Seashell Photo Frame Craft: Summer in Ponte Vedra Beach means seashells and we’re putting them to creative use on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 10:30 a.m. to noon
  • Portrait Sketches: Thursday, Aug. 6, from 11 a.m. to noon 
  • Honey & Tea Sales: It’s time to stock up on our favorite local honey and loose leaf teas by “Honey, Do Honey!” June and Dennis Hill will be present on Thursday, Aug. 6, from noon to 1 p.m. to sell their products and save you the trip! Cash, check, or credit/debit cards accepted.
  • S.H.I.N.E.: ElderSource support specialist Jim Mace presents “Medicare and More Q & A” on Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 11 a.m. to noon. Jim does not sell products but offers free and unbiased counseling on Medicare insurance issues. 
  • Right-Sizing: Senior Transition Specialist Jennifer Walker will give some tips on how to make life more simplified in your golden years on Thursday, Aug. 13, from 11 a.m. to noon
  • Back to School Trivia: Nothing says “August” better than “back to school”! Everyone will play Jeopardy-style trivia to test their general knowledge of ABC’s and 123’s! Don’t worry, this will be team-play for greater minds! Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 11 a.m. to noon
  • Birthday Party with James Cargill: What better way to celebrate August birthdays than with the music of the Great American Songbook! Enjoy live music and a piece of cake on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 11 a.m. to noon
  • SJC Parks & Recreation: Director Ryan Kane will speak on the various recreation parks throughout St. Johns County, including their amenities and program offerings. Find a new place to explore on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 11 a.m. to noon
  • St. Johns County Legal Aid: “Is Probate a Dirty Word? What is It?” will be presented by Megan Wall, managing attorney for St. Johns County Legal Aid on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 11 a.m. to noon
