Walk your dog at a botanical garden event

The “dog days of summer” are marked by relentless heat, when the sun blazes high and the air feels thick with humidity. Named after Sirius, the Dog Star, rising with the sun during this time, these days often bring a sense of stillness and sluggishness, as though the world itself is trying to escape the heat. For many, it’s a time of sun-drenched afternoons, cold lemonade and seeking shade under big leafy trees.

It’s also a great time to walk with your pooch along the shaded canopy trails of the St. Johns Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve, 8310 C.R. 13 South, near Hastings.

While your canine companion is sniffing along, you can enjoy the most beautiful collection of cacti, bromeliads, cycads and palms. Stop and rest along the way on one of the many benches, chairs and even a garden swing.

Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for children ages 8-18 and free to children younger than 8.

Dog Days of Summer is celebrated by the gardens from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 9. For more information, call 904-540-3294 or go to stjohnsbotanicalgarden.org.
