Chabad at the Beaches invites community to festival

Chabad at the Beaches will hold its Modern Jewish Food Festival from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7 at the Margarittaville Hotel in Jacksonville Beach.  

Admission is $1 per person (through Sept. 3) and includes entry to the festival and fun craft activities. A wide variety of delicious, modern kosher dishes will be available for purchase separately, offering guests a chance to savor the flavors of Jewish culinary tradition reimagined for today.

The festival is more than just a food event; it’s a lively celebration of Jewish culture and community. Experience a vibrant fusion of traditional and contemporary Jewish dishes, prepared by gifted chefs. The festival will feature a mix of international Jewish and Israeli food. A pre-Rosh Hashana honey experience, crafts and fun for the kids.

Activities will include free airbrush painting, a balloon artist, arts and crafts and an engaging hands-on honey experience in preparation for the high holidays.

Event’s focus: Protecting the salt marsh

The Gullah/Geechee Famlee and South Atlantic Salt Marsh Initiative (SASMI) invite the public to enjoy art and upcycling as tools for learning about how to protect the salt marsh and all aquatic environments during Gullah/Geechee CREATE, noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Bring family and friends for a fun afternoon of marine conservation exploration, highlighting the importance of removing debris and plastics from marine ecosystems. Wear comfortable closed-in shoes and bring work gloves.

Free lecture topic: ‘Little Particles for Big Diseases’

The University of Florida Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience Evenings at Whitney Lecture Series continues at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 with the program titled “Little Particles for Big Diseases.” Dr. Jamal Lewis, associate professor J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Florida, will be the speaker.

This free lecture will be presented in person at the UF Whitney Laboratory Lohman Auditorium, 9505 Ocean Shore Blvd., St. Augustine. Those interested also have the option of registering to watch via Zoom live the night of the lecture.

In this talk, Lewis will focus on two particulate systems currently under development in his lab, which attempt to control critical cellular and humoral mediators that cause conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and autoimmune autism.
