Writers of fiction know that conflict drives the narrative. Conflict may lead to physical or verbal altercations, but writers sometimes struggle to create authentic scenes, whether it involves fisticuffs or merely harsh words.
Martial arts expert Dan Sharp will share insights for “Writing Winning Fight Scenes” at the Ponte Vedra Writers meeting, 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. Due to construction at the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library, the group will meet in the Media Room at the Ocean Grove Condominiums, 1 Arbor Club Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach.
Authentic fight scenes are built on sensory details and the characters’ emotional stakes. Sharp tells us that “conflict is a turning point in the storyline for our characters and deserves careful attention to details.” He will discuss how a fight can develop and provide resources to improve our accuracy in describing them. He might even display or brandish some fake “weapons” for demonstration purposes only.
Sharp is a research scientist by profession and received the Outstanding Professor Award at the University of Florida, where he was honored as an emeritus professor. He’s also the author of several action novels and the upcoming nonfiction title “Fear is a Four-Letter Word.” Learn more at www.dansharp-writer.com.
