The St. Johns County Housing Rehabilitation Program was launched more than 20 years ago. In 2024 alone, it helped 37 residents stay in their homes with an investment of $1.9 million for a variety of repairs.
“It’s to help people stay where they are and thrive,” said Jennifer Harvey, housing and community services manager. “It is so fulfilling to give people their dignity of living in place and aging in place safely and securely. It’s what fuels everybody’s passion for the program.”
The program is designed to address immediate and potential housing issues, thereby preventing further damage to the structure while enabling occupants to continue residing in their homes. Code, safety and health issues are paramount while the county addresses roof, plumbing, septic, electrical and central heat and air repairs.
“I’ve been here since 1980, 45 years now, and I really enjoyed the house,” said John Wilbur, recipient of assistance from the Housing Rehabilitation Program. “This is my first house, and I wanted to keep it if I could.”
