Habitat St. Johns building more homes

Posted

Working together with donors, volunteers and partners, Habitat St. Johns met its goal of building 18 homes at Volusia Woods in fiscal year 2024-25. That far exceeds prior years, which averaged four to six homes per year.

Of those 18 homes, 14 are closed and occupied by new Habitat St. Johns’ homeowners. They come from a mix of backgrounds including veterans, hospitality workers, a St. Johns County employee, a bank employee, a St. Johns County School bus assistant and CNAs.

Three of the other four homes have future homeowners lined up, and it is a matter of getting financing finalized and/or completing sweat equity hours. One of the three will possibly be closing in the next week or two.

Habitat St. Johns is opening a model home to make it easier for people to see how nice the homes are, get a feel for the Volusia Woods neighborhood and learn more about the homeownership program. The grand opening will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. The model home at 890 Helen St.

Habitat St. Johns is well on its way to building 20 homes this fiscal year.  There are already eight homes underway on McDonald Avenue in Volusia Woods.

In addition, the organization has begun the process of permitting the next project, called Cypress Village, on North Clay Street and West King Extension. This next project will have 17 single-family homes.

This neighborhood along with some lots in Vermont Heights will be the focus for the 2026-27 fiscal year. In addition, the nonprofit will be building homes on two lots on Pearl Street utilizing more volunteer labor, giving volunteers an opportunity to do more construction work.
