After more than a decade of visionary leadership and passionate advocacy for the craft spirits industry, Philip McDaniel, CEO and co-founder of St. Augustine Distillery, has announced his retirement. Since launching the award-winning distillery in 2013, McDaniel has championed local, sustainable production and helped modernize Florida’s spirits laws. His efforts expanded opportunities for small distillers and reshaped the state’s regulatory landscape. A respected voice in the industry, McDaniel has served on the board of directors for the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS), amplifying the national voice of craft distillers. He also sat on the Visit Florida board and served multiple terms — including as chairman — on the St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches Visitors & Convention Bureau (VCB), where he promoted regional tourism and entrepreneurship.
“What started as a ‘cool idea’ became one of Florida’s top attractions and the largest craft spirits brand in the state,” said McDaniel. “I’m grateful to our shareholders, our incredible team, our industry partners and the 1.5 million guests who’ve visited and supported us. I’m excited to support our leadership team — Mike Diaz (CFO) and Will Hensler (COO) — in my new role as founder emeritus.” McDaniel’s legacy extends beyond business. He is admired for his mentorship, advocacy and commitment to community. Though stepping back from daily operations, he remains a passionate supporter of the craft spirits movement and the future of St. Augustine Distillery.
