Credit union, JSO plan fraud prevention seminars

RadiFi Credit Union is partnering with Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) economic crime detectives to host a seminar series focused on scam prevention and fraud awareness. The seminars are designed to help people recognize, avoid and respond to common scams that affect residents across the state.

This initiative by RadiFi comes at a crucial time, as the Federal Trade Commission reported a jump in fraud in 2024; Florida ranked first in the nation in internet scams, with Floridians reporting $866 million in losses and more than 115,000 identity theft incidents.

Florida also took the top national ranking for credit card identity theft, according to a recent study by Lending Tree.

Detectives from JSO’s Economic Crimes Unit will also share insights on current fraud trends seen in Jacksonville and provide additional prevention strategies. Each session will conclude with an interactive Q&A session. Light refreshments and take-home educational materials will be provided for all attendees.

Participants will gain practical tools and knowledge, including:

  • Common scams: Romance scams, gift card scams (especially prevalent during the holiday season) and charity/nonprofit scams.
  • Real-life examples of recent cases in Jacksonville.
  • Warning signs and red flags to help spot fraudulent activity.
  • Guidance on how to decline fraudulent requests with confidence.
  • Steps to take if you become a victim, including reporting and recovery actions
  • Available resources for ongoing support

The seminars are open to the public. Walk-ins are welcome. The two seminars will take place on:

  • Thursday, Sept. 18, 6-8 p.m. 562 Park St., Jacksonville
  • Thursday, Oct. 16, 6-8 p.m. 9802 Old Baymeadows Road, Jacksonville
