Puja Gautam runs Jax Spice with the help of her close-knit family, a dynamic that influences everything from the restaurant’s diverse menu to its ability to comfortably host large groups. In the future, with plans for storefront expansion and dreams of selling prepackaged versions of their signature dishes in supermarkets, Gautam says this family-oriented mindset won’t change.
Gautam’s father, an experienced businessman, and her mother, a passionate cook, inspired Gautam to bring Jax Spice to life. Her mother-in-law is also well-versed in Nepali and North Indian cuisine, offering her expertise to the restaurant’s dishes.
“The menus and the different spices and flavors are always vetted by my mother-in-law, my mother, and my father because they know the right way that things should taste,” Gautam said.
The menu at Jax Spice is full of fresh, made to order Nepali and North Indian cuisine. The food combines time-honored recipes passed down through generations with an authentic glimpse of South Asia’s culinary staples. Everything on the menu can be customized, from the level of spice to the combination or proteins, a unique quality that puts Jax Spice on the map.
Their two locations – one at Jacksonville Beach and the other on St. John’s 210 – are open seven days per week, including holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. The St. John’s location contains a large, private hall that can be reserved for wedding receptions, showers, birthdays, graduations, holiday parties, and more.
“If you want to enjoy a good drink and have Indian food that’s tailored to your specific spice level, then you can find a perfect dinner at Jax Spice,” Gautam said.
