Carla Defuria is a health coach and registered dietitian at Flagler Health+ who brings her unique skillset to the area to help people with their health journey. Recently, she told us a little about herself and her career.

Tell us about your work as a health coach and registered dietitian with Flagler Health+. What’s involved in your work? How do people avail themselves of your services?

My role as a registered dietitian and health coach is multifaceted. I receive referrals from Flagler Health+ physicians for nutrition consultations, and I also work in community health improvement providing free workshops and offering other health-coaching services.

I work with clients one-on-one or in small groups to help them improve their health. I also offer educational seminars and cooking demonstrations to the community.

People find me through their providers, by word of mouth and other social media outlets, or by simply walking through the Flagler Health+ Village at Nocatee.

What do you like best about your career?

I really enjoy working with people and helping them gain the knowledge and confidence needed to create sustainable lifestyle changes.

Because you are an expert in this field, you probably have insights that would benefit readers. Maybe there are things that people in general have never considered about maintaining their health or diet. Do you have any advice you’d like to share?

One of the biggest eye openers for people is learning how much added sugar there is in the food they eat. The new nutrition labels break down how many grams of added sugar there is per serving, so if you aren’t already, read your labels. Another insight I like to share is that preparation and planning are the keys to success. If you are looking to improve your nutrition, exercise or other healthy lifestyle habits, start by making a plan for yourself or come see me and I can help you get started.

Can you tell me a little about your background? How did you get to where you are today?

I had my own personal struggle with weight in the past, and that is one of the reasons why I wanted to get into this field. I actually started my career in corporate accounting and finance and received my MBA from UNF. I soon realized I was more passionate about health and wellness and went back to school to get my degree in nutrition and dietetics and became a registered dietitian.

My preferred area to focus on as a RD and, where much of my experience is, is in community health and wellness. I also am a certified personal trainer and have taught fitness classes for many years.

How long have you lived in this area?

I have lived in the Jacksonville area since 2009 and reside in Jacksonville Beach.

What do you like best about living here?

I am originally from New Jersey, so the best thing about living here is not having winter!

How do you like to spend your free time?

I like to cook and experiment with new recipes. I also enjoy spending time with friends, going to the beach, working out and training for local races, like the Gate River Run.
