On Saturday, July 11, Boeing Jacksonville teamed up with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and Communities in Schools Jacksonville to host their annual back-to-school supply giveaway.
Boeing is a global aerospace company that develops, manufactures and services commercial airplanes, defense products and space systems for customers in more than 150 countries.
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp are the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins and compete in the International League. They continually lead the state of Florida in attendance across all minor league professional sports organizations.
This marked the third year that the Jumbo Shrimp have been involved with the event and Matt Goudreau, president and general manager of the Jumbo Shrimp, said it’s become a highlight on their calendar.
“For the Jumbo Shrimp it’s so important to be well engrained in our community and do things that are going to bring smiles to kids’ faces,” he said.
There were about 40 students in attendance along with their families picking out school supplies for the upcoming year. The students also took a tour of the Boeing Jacksonville facility and saw several different kinds of jets, including F-18s.
Students also participated in a hands-on STEM activity where they built a tiny robot, while also learning about what it takes to enter the aerospace field. Other activities included constructing and flying paper airplanes.
Leon Baxton, CEO of Communities in Schools Jacksonville, said that this event is a perfect example of what can happen when community works together.
“This is what community is all about, working together with everyone for one cause,” he said.
