As a tribute to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Kalish/Walker Duo creates a program of music ranging from the Revolutionary War era to 20th century iconic music of Copland, Gershwin and Bernstein.

From the duo: “This program responds to the question: what makes American music sound, or feel, American? First, there’s an immense sense of possibility, a vibrant optimism that underscores so much of American music. After all, it’s the land of opportunity. Then there’s the longing for an imagined utopia, a place of safety and belonging. ‘American Dreams’ weaves together a wide array of American music that celebrates who we are and who we aspire to become as a people in our Semiquincentennial year.”

About the artists

As a recitalist and chamber musician, violinist Emily Kalish creates emotionally transformative experiences for audiences. She has designed imaginative programs that capture a moment in history as well as programs of music by 20th and 21st century women and concerts of music that sits at the crossroads of jazz and classical.

Since its founding in 2015, Kalish has been performing and producing chamber music for The Dream Unfinished, an organization that engages audiences with issues of social justice and civil rights through classical music. The Dream Unfinished offers performances of works by under-represented composers in partnership with activists and community organizations.

Kyle P. Walker is a critically acclaimed pianist, music director and educator whose work sits at the intersection of artistic excellence and social purpose. Celebrated for his commanding technique, compelling stage presence and visionary programming, Walker has built a career defined by a singular mission: to use music as a catalyst for dialogue around social justice, cultural identity and equity.

His performances bring together the traditions of Western classical repertoire and the voices of composers historically excluded from the concert stage, creating experiences that are as intellectually rigorous as they are emotionally resonant.

“American Dreams” brings a compelling mix of American music that speaks to optimism and cultural identity.
