The Municipal Service District (MSD) of Ponte Vedra Beach held the monthly meeting on Monday, Sept. 14, at Christ Church.

Public Works Director Greg Caldwell was present to share an update on the FDOT improvements to State Road A1A.

According to Caldwell, Public Works has been working closely with FDOT to come up with an alternate plan for the improvements.

On June 23, FDOT held a public meeting to discuss their proposed changes, and Caldwell said the two main takeaways from that meeting were to try and reduce U-turn movements and minimize the impact to palm trees and other plant life.

The new plan removes all U-turns at the A1A and Solana Road intersection and will possibly only affect one tree.

Caldwell said Public Works is still looking at the changes to make sure everything is doable and once they have a set plan they will inform the community.

“We are looking to establish these projects and get something moving forward as quickly as we can, but we want the community to know what we are doing and why we are doing it,” said Caldwell.

Caldwell said one of the biggest positives of the new plan is that there will be no changes in movement going from the east side of A1A to the west side or vice versa. He also noted that the updated plan would still have the same effects as FDOT’s original model.

“The new plan removes U-turns and minimizes tree impact while still providing the same traffic relief,” said Caldwell.

Caldwell also emphasized that Public Works is still refining the new changes, but when they are finalized, the public will be informed.

“There will be some type of interaction with the public to make sure the information is provided,” he said.

The MSD board also held their initial budget proceedings for the new fiscal year. They discussed a proposed millage rate and approved a tentative budget. The final budget hearing will take place on Sept. 24 at Christ Church in the Formations Building in room 202.
