Sports Spotlight: Nic Bunkosky

Nic Bunkosky is a junior defensive back and wide receiver for the Nease football team. Bunkosky made several big plays on both sides of the ball for the Panthers in Friday night’s 47-15 win over Orange Park. He not only scored a touchdown on a pass play on offense, but also returned an interception 92 yards for a score on defense.

What was the emotion after scoring both offensively and defensively on Friday night?

I never really thought about it, to be honest. I just wanted my team to win. I was in the right place at the right time. My teammate Kevin Boose made a big block for me to set up the

Do you prefer playing offense or defense?

I really love them both. I love being physical on defense. I appreciate coach Krause giving me that opportunity. I’ve played both since Pop Warner, so the fundamentals have just stuck with me.

How is training and preparation different to play both sides of the ball?

On defense, you work on (interceptions) and fundamentals. On offense, it’s running routes, practicing, learning my stuff. I go to lunch with my offensive coach and learn the plays.

 

Are there any particular players you admire or try to model yourself after?

Of course, the Florida greats, like Tim Tebow. And Derrick Henry. Tebow and Henry are great role models.

What are your plans after high school?

I would love to play college football at some level. And academics are also very important. I’ll just have to wait and see.

What has been the most challenging, and most rewarding, thing about playing football at Nease?

The challenge is preparing for games each week, watching film on opponents. The rewarding part is playing with my team, the coaches - and winning on Friday nights.
