St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar and members from his office’s Community Affairs division were invited to the annual Florida Conference on Aging Aug. 29 to receive an award for their service efforts to seniors in St. Johns County.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJSO) was nominated by members of the Florida Council on Aging in the category of “Service to Seniors by an Organization” for its commitment to serving the community and working with local residentsspecifically through the ongoing efforts of its CARE and Safe Trak Programs.

The CARE program (Community and Advocacy Resources for the Elderly) enables visits by sheriff’s office personnel to seniors who have no local family, or who live alone, in order to have an open dialogue with law enforcement and provide referrals for social services, when applicable. The Safe Trak Program facilitates the recovery of seniors prone to wandering by utilizing radio frequency tracking devices to return them home quickly and safely.

During the annual conference in Orlando, Shoar and several members of the Community Affairs Bureau were presented with a plaque recognizing their efforts related to “Service to Seniors.”

“The Florida Conference on Aging has a 50-year history of providing advocacy, education and support to Florida’s aging population,” Shoar said. “For their members to recognize the men and women of this agency for our efforts is truly an honor that we can be proud of.”
