Secrets to writing humor to be revealed at Ponte Vedra Writers meeting

Posted

Longtime humor writer Erik Deckers will share “Ten Secrets to Writing Humor” in the Saturday, Feb. 24 meeting of the Ponte Vedra Writers at 10:30 a.m. at the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library.

Humor lives in the gap between the ridiculous and the real, according to Deckers. Humor writers know how to wedge themselves firmly in that gap and reveal the vein of humor found there. In his presentation, Deckers will discuss the humor formula and how to crack it. He'll share 10 secrets to finding humor in almost every situation (including ones you’re not supposed to), and the techniques professionals use to “write funny” without resorting to tired clichés, stereotypes and old knock-knock jokes.

Deckers is president of Pro Blog Service, a content marketing agency with clients throughout the United States. He is also the co-author of several social media and marketing books. He’s been blogging since 1997, and a newspaper humor columnist since 1994. He has written radio and stage plays, and numerous business articles. Deckers was the spring 2016 writer-in-residence at the Jack Kerouac House in Orlando, and now serves on its board of directors.

The Ponte Vedra Writers chapter is one of over 50 writers’ groups affiliated with the Florida Writers Association, a non-profit membership organization with nearly 1,500 members. Visit www.floridawriters.net for more information about the organization.

The meeting is free and open to the public.
