Ponte Vedra High School wrestling falls to Bolles

The Ponte Vedra High School wrestling team travelled to Bolles on Jan. 30 and fell 40-38. Despite starting the match 18 points behind due to forfeits at 170, 220 and heavyweight, the team marched back to make it competitive, yet it ultimately proved to not be enough.

Adding to the excitement in the final match of the evening, Troy Maritato moved up to 195 pounds, was leading 14-4 and had his opponent decked on the mat ready for a match-tying pin when time ran out.

Alex de Almeida had an impressive comeback win/pin at 138 pounds, and Rett Maritato put away another opponent with a surgical second-period pin. Preston Turner contributed an 11-4 decision, while Steven Kowitski, moving up a weight class, refused to be pinned by an experienced wrestler, thus denying Bolles a much desired six points at 132 pounds. At 145 pounds, Bolles declined to send out their wrestler against Ethan Baur, conceding Ponte Vedra six points.

On the first-year wrestler newcomer front, Ponte Vedra recorded pins from Mikey Stephens at 113 with a “cement job,” and Simon Mann at 126 with a “wrist and half nelson.”
