Ponte Vedra resident Kay Verble was recently heralded as one of CURE magazine’s “Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) Heroes” for 2017. Presented by brain cancer survivor Maria Menounos, Verble received the award at a Nov. 16 gala, held during the 22nd annual Scientific Meeting of the Society for Neuro-Oncology in San Francisco.

Now in its third year, the GBM Heroes Award recognizes those who have made a difference in the lives of GBM patients. Recipients are nominated by patients, healthcare professionals, advocates and peers.

As executive director for the Sontag Foundation, Verble works closely with early-career researchers and clinicians who have received Sontag grants for brain cancer research. She created a program of high-touch patient navigation services provided by a multidisciplinary team of nurses and social workers. Verble also serves as executive director for The Brain Tumor Network, a local nonprofit that offers information and support for those diagnosed with brain cancer.

“Each year, we are honored to award these heroes, who have made significant impact in the GBM community,” said Michael J. Hennessy Jr., president of Michael J. Hennessy Associates, Inc., parent company of CURE magazine. “We are proud of their contributions and are pleased to bring these heroes forward to be recognized for their hard work.”
