A Ponte Vedra Beach teenager died on Tuesday, Oct. 31 after being hit by a car while skateboarding on U.S. Route 1.

Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) Sgt. Dylan Bryan said Hunter Dudley, a 17-year-old Ponte Vedra High School student, was skateboarding southbound on the highway in the left shoulder near Palencia in St. Augustine when he veered to the right and was hit by a van. The driver of the van administered CPR before authorities transported the teen to UF Health Jacksonville, where he died later in the afternoon from his injuries. Bryan said the investigation is ongoing.

St. Johns County School District spokeswoman Christina Langston said members of its crisis team subsequently visited Ponte Vedra High School to provide support to students and staff.
