According to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJSO), a 29-year-old Ponte Vedra man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of domestic battery by strangulation after a verbal dispute with his girlfriend reportedly turned physical.

A SJSO police report states that Matthew Fiedler struck the woman in the face with an open hand and choked her to the point that she had trouble breathing. The report also states the woman said she felt faint as a result of being choked. Deputies reported bruising around her neck and swelling around her right eye.

In a questionnaire found in the police report, deputies noted the woman said Fiedler has never used a weapon or threatened to use a weapon to harm her, nor has he threatened to kill her or her children. The deputies reported that the woman did say, however, that she thinks Fiedler is capable of killing her. According to SJSO, the couple has been together for seven years.

Fiedler, who lives at 611 Ponte Vedra Lakes Boulevard, was booked into the St. Johns County Jail, and his bond is set at $2,500, according to the St. Johns County Jail website.
