The Friends of the GTM Research Reserve recently announced that Arielle Nixon, the First Alert meteorologist at Action News Jax, will serve as the ambassador of the Adopt a Nest program at the GTM Research Reserve. The turtle nest adoption program raises money to help protect the marine turtle population of Atlantic greens, leatherbacks and loggerheads.
“We are excited that Arielle will represent the Adopt a Nest program,” said Ellen Leroy-Reed, executive director of Friends of the GTM Reserve. “She is passionate about sea turtles and is eager to spread the message about how important they are to our precious ecosystem.”
Nixon forecasts the weather every weekday morning on Action News This Morning and Action News at Noon on WJAX. She holds a Bachelor of Science in earth and atmospheric sciences from the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation from the American Meteorological Society. Nixon is also involved with Expanding Your Horizons: NE Florida, an organization that helps encourage girls to become involved with STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) interests and careers.
Adopting a nest at the GTM Research Reserve supports ongoing marine turtle research; helps contribute data to state, national and international programs; and provides needed equipment and supplies for maintaining the Sea Turtle Patrol Program. The turtle nest adoption season began at GTM on May 1 and will continue through July 31.
