Firefighters from St. Johns County Fire and Rescue Station Seven performed a heroic rescue July 13 as they rescued a kitten that had crawled up and was now stuck near the gas tank of a car.

They were first made aware after a resident stopped by the station and shared that while she was taking a stroll on the beach after work, she heard the cries of a kitten.

Upon investigating, she found the kitten was stuck near the gas tank of her car and she searched for help in freeing the kitten.

Firefighters Cory Mayo and Josh Romaine worked diligently for about 40 minutes and were able to rescue the frightened kitten, who did not sustain any injuries from the situation.

The firefighters brought the kitten into the station, where Romaine and fellow firefighter Marc Feliciano cleaned her up.

The kitten quickly won the hearts of everyone at the station, including Lt. Skip Drainer and Lt. Jerod Solana.

The kitten found a home following the rescue, as Drainer's wife came to the station and took her home to join their family.

The kitten, now named "Gracie," is adapting well and has a veterinary appointment scheduled.
