GRASP Academy recognized as School of Excellence

Posted

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, an opportunity to examine a learning condition that affects as many as 250,000 people in Jacksonville and 25,000 students in the Duval County Public School system.

GRASP Academy has taught children with dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia in grades one through eight since 2015 with a successful record of moving the students into mainstream high schools.

This year, GRASP Academy has been recognized as a 2022-2024 School of Excellence by the National PTA and is one of only 386 PTAs and schools nationwide to be so designated as having mastered tenets of welcoming all families, communicating effectively, supporting student success, speaking for every child, sharing power and collaborating with the community.

The GRASP Academy community and local elected officials celebrated the school’s success on Friday, Oct. 20, prior to its annual Dyslexia Dash at the school, which is located at 3101 Justina Road.

Children who struggle with reading, writing and math are often incorrectly labeled as less intelligent. They may very well be very intelligent students who learn differently and can thrive and succeed if taught differently than mainstream students. Dyslexia (reading), dyscalculia (math) and dysgraphia (writing) are learning conditions that impact the ability of children to learn conventionally.

GRASP Academy is a Duval County Public Schools option that incorporates Florida State Standards that address children with dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia. Teachers are specially trained, and the administration is nationally recognized as experts in addressing the special needs of smart children who learn differently.
