Flag dream comes true

Before he retired from St. Johns County School District after 23 years of service, Retired Major Nick Athanaseas wanted Ponte Vedra High School to erect a flagpole in the school’s courtyard. He envisioned an area for students, faculty and community members to gather and honor the American flag.

Athanaseas wanted to dedicate the flag to the men and women of St. Johns County who served as first responders and active or retired military. After serving as the director of maintenance at PVHS for 10 years, his dream of this special flag came true, but with a twist.

In addition to the original dedication, PVHS also dedicated the flag to Athanaseas for his service in the U.S. Army National Guard Medical Service and his dedication to keeping PVHS a beautiful and vibrant campus.

A ceremony was held on May 24 and was attended by both St Johns County Sheriff’s Office and St. Johns County Fire Rescue department.
