How do teenagers who have been banned from dancing end up moving so swiftly on stage? Ask the students from Ponte Vedra High School’s theater department and they’ll say that’s the magic of “Footloose.”
About 100 students will bring the story to life at Ponte Vedra High School April 26-29. Shows will start at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday; and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets, which can be purchased at the door, are $15 for adults and $10 for students.
Theater instructor Jason Nettle directs the musical production that follows a successful run of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in February. Last year’s spring musical production was “Guys and Dolls,” also boasting a big cast of actors and dancers.
“Our group of talented and engaged students continues to bring their best to the stage,” Nettle said. “There are many moving parts in a big musical. The students are up for the challenge and they make it fun.”
The adapted music by Tom Snow, lyrics by Dean Pitchford and book by Pitchford and Walter Bobbie is based on the 1984 film of the same name. It brings to life the story of a city teen who moves to a Midwestern small town where dancing has been banned. He rallies his classmates to change their monotonous world and stand up to the righteous adults who impose a robotic existence. Their rebellion comes with a good helping of fun, dance, love and unforgettable ‘80s hits.
