One person was killed Monday morning in a single vehicle crash on Solana Road in Ponte Vedra Beach, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJSO).
The driver was identified as Austen Stoddard Jenney, 22, of Ponte Vedra. The accident on Aug. 20 took place at the 500 block of Solana Road, east of the entrance to Marsh Landing Country Club. Chuck Mulligan, the community affairs bureau commander for SJSO, said the vehicle was traveling westbound as it entered the curve of the road. He said Jenney continued straight instead of turning and struck a concrete post. The car proceeded to overturn and then collide with a tree.
Mulligan said Jenney's vehicle struck the tree so hard that the engine and transmission were both ejected from the car. Due to the damage to the vehicle, Mulligan said speed was a significant factor in the crash. He noted the vehicle was discovered early in the morning around sunrise but that the exact time of the crash is unknown. As a result of the crash, a portion of Solana Road was closed for several hours.
