COA’s THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center announces August events

The following programs will be held at COA’s THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center, 175 Landrum Lane, Ponte Vedra Beach, beginning in August 2023. Most classes are five weeks long and begin the first week of August. If you have any questions or wish to register, call Suzanne Duvall at 904-209-3659.

Lunch — Tuesdays: Five weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 1, from noon to 1 p.m. Registration required a week in advance and fee required — $5 per meal.

Lunch —Thursdays: Five weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 3, from noon to 1 p.m. Registration required a week in advance and fee required — $5 per meal.

AARP Safe Driver Course: This course is two days long; you must attend both days to receive a completion certificate. The fee is $20 for AARP members and $25 for nonmembers. A completion certificate is required to be eligible for an auto insurance discount (discounts vary by insurer).  AARP Driver Safety is offering the Smart Driver course for free in Florida to individuals with AARP Medicare Supplement Plan insured by UnitedHealthcare. Bring your proof of insurance to the class if you have this coverage. Times and days are: 2-5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, and 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16.

Duplicate Bridge: Four weeks starting Friday, Aug. 4, noon to 3 p.m. Fee required: $2 per person, per Friday.

Line Dancing Class: Instructor Will Oglesby teaches you many different line dances with a good selection of music. Open to all adults and experience levels. Five weeks from 4 to 5:30 p.m. starting Wednesday, Aug. 2. Registration and fee required: $37.50 per month.

Acrylic Painting: Four weeks starting Wednesday, Aug. 5, 9 a.m. to noon. No fee required. Instructor on summer hiatus; will return Sept. 13.

Caregiver Support Group (free program): 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2. The group is open to all adult caregivers; meets once a month, on the first Wednesday of each month. Register with the Alzheimer’s Association at 800-272-3900.

Chair Exercise — Tuesdays: Five weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 1, 9:30 to 10 a.m.

Tai Chi: Five weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 3, 10-11 a.m.

Canasta — Tuesdays: Five weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 1, 10 a.m. to noon.  

Canasta — Thursdays: Five weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 3, 10 a.m. to noon.

Mexican Train Dominoes: Five weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 1, 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Ask a Nurse: Five weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 1, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Bingo — Tuesdays: Five weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 1, 1-2 p.m.

Bingo — Thursdays: Five weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 3, 1-2 p.m.

Social Bridge: Five weeks starting Wednesday, Aug. 2, 9 to 9:30 a.m.

Board Game Playing: Five weeks starting Wednesday, Aug. 2, 9 to 9:30 a.m.

Wii Bowling: Five weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 3, 10-11 a.m.

Tech Help — Tuesdays: Five weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 1, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bocce Ball: Four weeks starting Friday, Aug. 4, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Sing-Along: A fun-filled hour with Lisa Atkinson of Home Instead — Lift your voice and sing! Tuesday, Aug. 1, 11:00 a.m. to noon.

Scattergories!: Play the popular game of Scattergories, where you name items according to letters. Fun for all! Thursday, Aug. 3, 11 a.m. to noon.

St. John’s County Library: The Ponte Vedra Beach Branch of the St. John’s County Public Library System visits Tuesday, Aug. 8, 11 a.m. to noon.

Encompass Rehab: Learn about the various levels of care available as one ages and facts about an inpatient rehabilitation hospital. Light refreshments provided. Thursday, Aug. 10, 11 a.m. to noon.

St. John’s County Recycling: Chris Benjamin, outreach coordinator, St. John’s County Board of County Commissioners, visits to talk about recycling. Tuesday, Aug. 15, 11 a.m. to noon.

Pachabelly Dance: One of the oldest forms of dance. Belly dancing promotes balance, strength, digestion, coordination and confidence as well as being a fun and highly expressive dance form. Join us for a performance by Denise “Janaan” Domack. Thursday, Aug. 17, 11 a.m. to noon.

Windsor Pointe: A free lecture on storm preparedness presented by Karen DeWeese. Topical trivia and light refreshments. Tuesday, Aug. 22, 11 a.m. to noon.

Monthly Birthday Celebration: Happy Birthday August Babies! Join us for cake and the music of Nick Marino. Thursday, Aug. 24, 11 a.m. to noon.

Community Hospice: Learn what palliative care is and how it is offered through Community Palliative Consultants, a program of Community Hospice available in several area hospitals. Light refreshments provided. Tuesday, Aug. 29, 11 a.m. to noon.

Legal: Free lecture: “Probate; is it a dirty word?” with St. Johns County Legal Aid Managing Attorney Megan Wall. Thursday, Aug. 31, 11 a.m. to noon.
