Braiding class raises money to fight breast cancer

There have been many unique ways to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness, and that will now also include a braiding class at Zinke Hair Studio in Ponte Vedra Beach.

The salon is located at the Sawgrass Village Shopping Center at 333 Village Main Street, Suite 640, and the proceeds from the event will be donated to The DONNA Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization focusing on breast cancer awareness.

According to Megan Robertson, who owns a pair of studios with her mother, one they opened 12 years ago in Boulder, Colorado, while they moved to Florida and opened the studio’s Ponte Vedra Beach location in February, and they were looking for a way to give back and get more involved in their new community.

It did not take long for Robertson to think of braids, which she is fully aware can be such a bonding experience, having daughters of her own.

“We had a lot of moms coming in and asking if we were going to do any braiding classes, so the interest was definitely there,” Robertson said.

The fundraising event will consist of two time slots with one at 2 p.m. and the other at 3 p.m. on Oct. 28 at the studio.

“The 2 p.m. slot is already full, but we still have spots available for 3 p.m.,” Robertson said. “And it does not necessarily have to be a mom and daughter taking part in the class, it could be a dad and daughter or a group of friends. Anyone looking to learn more about braiding techniques.”

The minimum donation required to take part is $10 per person, but larger donations are always accepted to help further the cause.

“I had a good friend who dealt with cancer and was a big promoter of the work The DONNA Foundation does, so that led me to wanting to donate our proceeds to them,” Robertson said.

According to Robertson, not knowing what experience levels will be involved in the class, she plans to start with the basics, but is willing to get a feel of everyone’s comfort level as she goes.

“Just as the idea for the class got its start, I’m letting it happen organically,” Robertson said.

The best way to reserve a spot at the event is to call the Ponte Vedra Beach studio at 904-686-1279.
