Bolles students welcome home USS Detroit

During Bolles Homecoming Week, students on the Middle School Bartram Campus took part in a different kind of Homecoming activity — celebrating the return of the USS Detroit (Littoral Combat Ship 7) to Naval Station Mayport.

Bolles middle school math teacher Ashlyn Watson organized the students as they made patriotic posters and gathered Gatorade, water and snacks for the Sept. 27 military homecoming celebration, where she welcomed her husband Lt. John Watson home from deployment.

According to Lt. Watson, the USS Detroit is the sixth ship of the namesake for the city of Detroit, Michigan, and is commanded by Commander Kyle Hickman. The current crew of the USS Detroit has proven themselves to be one of the most successful crews in the history of the LCS program. On the morning of Sept. 29, the USS Detroit became the fifth LCS to decommission from active service in the United States Navy.
