Art with a Heart in Healthcare (AWAHIH) has launched its annual fundraiser, Giving Tuesday, for the holidays.
Giving Tuesday focuses on gifts that give back to children and a global day of donations demonstrating the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and this year on Tuesday, Nov. 27, the charitable initiative begins when many focus on holiday and end-of-year giving.
As a nonprofit organization, Art with a Heart in Healthcare relies on donor support to help provide high-quality art supplies and fine art experiences to young patients coping with cancer, trauma and adversity to heal through creative expression. Patients are from Palm Coast to St. Augustine to Jacksonville and Fernandina Beach, and beyond.
Programs and services with artists, volunteers and University of North Florida interns create individualized art sessions that meet the needs of patients, at their bedsides and in groups. The nonprofit’s team of artists and volunteers have served tens of thousands of patients and their families in Northeast Florida at Wolfson Children's Hospital, Nemours Children's Specialty Clinic, St. Vincent’s Medical Center and Mayo Clinic.
According to Ponte Vedra Beach resident Casey Andeer, her daughter Rue was fighting leukemia since the age of two, and now at five years old, Rue’s disease is in remission.
“We credit Rue’s fight for her life, health and wellbeing to Art with a Heart in Healthcare,” Andeer said. “The program and artists at Wolfson Children’s Hospital kept our daughter busy while she developed a creative talent that has stayed with her to this day. Rue was able to have fun with an artistic outlet as a painter during this terrible and painful time in her life. We are truly grateful and ask the community to give.”
