A Night at Roy’s — the Monique Burr Foundation for Children, Inc.’s (MBF) annual fundraising event held Wednesday, May 2 at Roy’s Restaurant in Jacksonville Beach — raised a record $65,000 this year.

“We are so grateful for the turnout we saw at A Night at Roy’s,” said Lynn Layton, executive director for MBF. “Because of this support, we can keep moving toward our goal of expanding our reach and keeping more children safe from bullying and abuse.”

The more than 500 guests at the fundraiser enjoyed contemporary, Hawaiian-influenced gourmet cuisine by James Beard Award winner and world-renowned chef Roy Yamaguchi, along with tropical refreshments and wine and entertainment by Nashville artist Colleen Orender and local artist Will Harden. A silent auction also helped raise funds.

The money raised at “A Night at Roy’s” will help MBF continue to expand the breadth and reach of its prevention education programs. The Foundation’s MBF Child Safety Matters™ and MBF Teen Safety Matters™ programs are already delivered year-round to schools across Florida, and select communities across the country, and are designed to educate and empower students and adults with information and strategies to prevent bullying, cyberbullying, digital abuse and all types of child abuse and exploitation.

Olympic gold medalist to help MBF reach young athletes with new curriculum

Also at the fundraiser, MBF founder Ed Burr announced that Olympic gold medalist Shannon Miller has joined the Board of Directors.

Miller, a seven-time Olympic medalist, Jacksonville resident, mother and advocate for women and children’s health, will work with longtime board member and former president of the WNBA Donna Orender to lead a task force spearheading new curriculum development.

“As adults we are responsible for protecting our children,” said Miller. “We are also responsible for empowering children with the tools they need to protect themselves. It’s not just about protecting athletes at the highest levels of sport. Athletes, children, must be protected at all levels.”
