When most kids think about plans for their birthday celebrations, visions of all the presents from all their friends certainly fill their heads.
But two local kids, Andrew Siguler and Nisha Sunku put others needs in front of theirs while celebrating their birthdays this year.
Siguler celebrated his 11th birthday in January. For his special day Siguler knew that he wanted to do something to help those in the community that were less fortunate. So he asked his guests to bring a monetary donation for the Sulzbacher Center instead of a birthday gift for him. Eighteen people attended his birthday party on Jan. 10 and Siguler was able to raise $300 for the Sulzbacher Center.
His parents George and Pam Siguler were proud of their son and applauded his decision to help the needy on his birthday. The family came to the Sulzbacher Center on Jan. 22 to present the check for $300 to the Sulzbacher Center’s President and CEO, Audrey Moran.
Nisha Sunku turned 16 on Valentine’s Day. The Saturday before her birthday Sunku’s parents threw her a Sweet 16 Birthday Party. Sunku organized the whole party, which was attended by more than 50 of her friends. To honor her Indian heritage, the party had an Indian theme, with Sunku wearing a traditional sari and providing henna tattoos for her guests.
Much like Siguler, Sunku did not want gifts for her birthday. Instead, she asked on the invitation that in lieu of gifts people bring donations for the American Red Cross for Haitian Earthquake Relief. Sunku collected close to $1,000 for Haiti.
