Freebird Live lit up with fireflies Tuesday as Owl City, the synthpop musical project by Adam Young entertained fans at the sold-out venue.
Young started Owl City in the basement of his parent’s house in Owatonna, Minn. while working at a Coca-Cola bottling warehouse, and quickly developed a fan following, amassing million of plays of his songs on MySpace — songs which he said were the result of insomnia.
It was the viral popularity of his music on MySpace that attracted the interest of Universal Republic and Young signed with the record company early last year.
Owl City’s first album with Universal Republic was released in July 2009 and debuted at number 27 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart. The album quickly spawned a hit with the first single "Fireflies" which made it all the way to the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
It was "Fireflies" that was the highlight of the night at Freebird Live in Jacksonville Beach as the crowd sang along and roared with excitement.
Young told the audience that this was his first trip to Florida and a welcome break from the cold weather in Minnesota.
Along with "Fireflies," Owl City played several other songs from the album including the second single, "Vanilla Twilight."
As the band thanked the crowd and made its way off the stage at the end of the night the crowd begin to chant "Encore" which resulted in the band coming back on stage and playing one more song, "Hello Seattle."
While the music of Owl City may not fit the taste of everyone it is clear the band has talent and knows how to entertain a crowd.
Perhaps a fan summed up the showbest, telling a friend, "now I can die happy."
