St. Augustine’s Jim Kern has been busy traveling the globe with his cameras for half a century in search of rare and endangered wildlife, leaving him somewhat unknown in this neck of the woods. Kern’s passion for this sort of work has landed him in more than 40 countries and in many magazines including; Audubon, Backpacker and National Geographic.

The December Art Walk will be North Florida’s first opportunity this year to see Kern’s engaging photographs, which will be on display at the St. Augustine Art Association’s North Gallery tonight from 5 to 9 p.m.

Kern’s pursuit of rare animals and birds has taken him to places like Rwanda, Kenya, sanctuaries in India, Malaya, Baffin Island, Pribiloff Islands, Philippines, French Guiana, Indonesia and other exotic territories. His adventurous accounts are a special treat in his book of wildlife photographs.

Kern will be on hand to address questions regarding how he tracks his aloof subjects and to inscribe his book, The Wildlife Art & Adventures of Jim Kern Photographer for those who want a copy.

"I particularly hope folks will read my pieces entitled First a Detour, Holy Snakes, Swimming and Flying with Deadly Snakes and A Night with a Coughing Lion. They’re among my favorites," said Kern.

The exhibit will be accessible Dec. 4 - 9. Kern’s work will also be on exhibit in 2010 at the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the A.E. Bachus Museum and Gallery.

Blogs and highlights of Kern’s current travels for his next book can be found at www.jimkern.us.com
