All creatures great and small

Most of the animals at Christ Episcopal Church’s annual Blessing of the Animals were of the four-footed, furry type … or fuzzy … or finny … but some had none of those features.

A self-contained bin of worms nestled in shredded paper was blessed along with a variety of dogs, cats, fish and stuffed animals. The worms will consume kitchen scraps and shredded white paper, which the county does not collect for recycling.

Vermiculture -- using worms to create nutrient-rich compost -- is one of several environmental stewardship initiatives underway at the Ponte Vedra Beach Church.

Others include reducing electricity and water usage at the church, encouraging conservation measures and sponsoring a free, ongoing course on Florida Friendly Landscaping that is open to the community.
