This past Tuesday morning a special event was hosted by the teenagers from the Winston Family YMCA at The Players Community Senior Center. Teenagers taught seniors how to text message.
The teens not only taught the seniors the basics of text messaging, but also text message etiquette and shortcuts.
"Our goal is that we are trying to provide a service to seniors by teaching them a new way to reach out to others, opening the doors to intergenerational communication," said YMCA Teen Director Bob O’lynn.
Sixteen kids aged 11-15 helped out at the event, which was held as one of The Players Senior Center’s special 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday programs. The teens in the program at the YMCA have donated their time in the past to the Senior Center, hosting a game day earlier this month.
Charlotte DeLuca aand the other seniors welcomed the teenager’s help and the idea of learning a new way to communicate, especially if it keeps them more in touch with their relatives.
"I really enjoy learning how to text message because I’m learning something new, and I can keep in touch with my children and grandchildren better as well," said DeLuca.
Other seniors, like Beverly Denneen, liked the idea of learning something new, especially if it had to do with using technology.
"I’ve definitely learned something new, but I don’t know if I will ever use it," said Denneen with a laugh.
